Our end-of-year picnic turned into a zoo! An invasion of paper mache animals and their keepers made it an event to remember.
The Elementary students spent the last three weeks of the school year working on two things: American Sign Language, and learning about animals from different continents.
Before he departed for Arizona in early May, Mr. Tom worked with the students to pair them up into seven couples and give each pairing a continent. The students then worked together to choose an animal particular to that continent. Their task was to learn about the animal, its habitat, its anatomy, its diet, life cycle, and anything else that they could learn.
Then they were tasked with producing a model of their selected creature, along with some rendition of their habitat.
The creativity and expression were something to behold! A koala hiding in a tree, a penguin standing on an iceberg, a European rabbit in a meadow, as well as a boa constrictor, an Indian cobra, a wolverine in its habitat, and an African elephant.
The students who were able to make it to the picnic were excited to share what they had learned with parents, siblings, and friends alike.
This Paper Mache Zoo may become a regular event!
